This year, we launched Globality’s first formal engineering internship program in our London, UK office.
Offering internships not only allows us to give aspiring professionals a look inside the working world, but it also helps us to stay on our toes. Fresh faces often bring new ideas to the table and help us see our own world in a new and different way.
We had the pleasure of welcoming three interns into our organization: Michael, Angelica and William! With Globality’s 2022 Summer Internships coming to an end, we took some time to ask them questions to reflect on their experience.
Michael: I have really enjoyed my time so far at Globality! What I appreciate most is the team dynamic – I feel like I have the space to experiment and build on my own features, while also having the support of more experienced developers when needed.
Angelica: It’s wonderful! This is my first formal internship, and I’m impressed and inspired by how the team organizes daily workflow efficiently with the help of visual tools. In daily work, I enjoy a great sense of achievement as I apply my logical thinking and problem-solving skills to practical projects. My favorite part during the week is exploring various London restaurants and chatting with colleagues during the lunch break.
William: My time at Globality has been fantastic. Everyone is so welcoming, friendly, and willing to give their time to help others. It’s a really positive environment that I am proud to be a part of.
Michael: I have been working with my team on the Warm Onboarding project. This project aims to automate how Globality imports provider data into its system and so I have been doing a lot of backend work. Most recently, I added functionality to an AI tool we use to gather the provider data, so that its results are automatically uploaded to OneDrive.
Angelica: I started building a Command Line tool that will engineers run tests easily. It’s relatively independent from the platform, so I could start with some easy work and gradually learn to expand the tool. Then there came an urgent project with a harsh deadline, so I built some features that are crucial to the business in three weeks. I’m very glad that as an intern I can also contribute to a project that is important to the company.
William: I have worked on refactoring some widgets to make them more robust and flexible. This includes adding concrete type definitions, splitting the widget into modular pieces, and using different libraries. I have also worked on new UX features that will inform the user of features they can take advantage of.
Michael: What I have found most challenging has been getting to grips with the large, pre-existing codebases, which has been a big jump from university. Another challenge has been learning to be more rigorous with my own coding, especially on unit tests.
Angelica: Before the internship, I only had basic self-taught coding knowledge because I study Maths in the university. I had to learn many things from scratch, including formal unit testing and the structure of large systems, but I quite enjoy the experience of learning and working at the same time. Every day there is something new and exciting.
William: Something that challenged me was the shift from university projects to real-world ones. Globality is on a scale I haven’t experienced before and it initially overwhelming to see the vast amount of technology that goes into a platform like this.
